Skulls and Big Foot
As most of you know, M is one strange kiddo.
She likes to collect skulls.
She calls them Mr. and Mrs. Bones.
She’s fully aware that she has a skull.
Which at 4, she thinks is the coolest thing ever.
People think she’s weird.
I’m happy she can like something out of the ordinary, and not be afraid of something most kids are afraid of.
But on the flip side of her skully love- is the big, dark and scary
BIG FOOT.
Sasquach.
Whatever you want to call it- M’s terrified of him.
And I’m not sure why.
She saw the iCarly episode, where Big Foot takes off with their RV.
That night and the next, she wet the bed.
She came out of her room crying, terrified Big Foot was going to get her.
Needless to say, she hasn’t watched iCarly since then, and it’s been exactly one week and three days since she last wet the bed.
She’ll bring up Big Foot to anyone she knows though.
And she’ll tell you exactly what she thinks about him, while I stand behind her making a face at the other person to change the subject.
Needless to say, as her mother, I find it strange that she’s terrified of something “fake” (now all you Big Foot hunters out there- don’t be sending me your hate mail) and love something that most kids are afraid of.
But, I’ve always known that M was a special kid.
So tell me, what are your kids afraid of, and how do you deal with it? I really need advice on this one…

I’d bet she not afraid of Skulls because they are real. She can touch them, manipulate them, scare other people with them. She’s in control of her skulls. Big Foot is something she’s only heard of but never come in contact with. She can’t touch one. She can’t play with one. She can’t be the boss of BF, and we know M likes to be the boss
Don’t play her fear off like it’s not a big deal, but also don’t you make a big deal of it. All you can do is reassure her. M’s a tough cookie, and eventually she’ll forget about BF or grow up to have her own Discovery show about Big Foot hunting!!

Julian is about M’s age, and he is terrified of roosters. Isn’t that weird!? It started when he was 2, and we visited my mom in CA for a few months. Her apartment was in an area that had free roaming chickens and roosters, and they would crow at dawn every morning. It would wake him up, and for some reason completely terrify him! To this day he talks about seeing and hearing roosters through his window at night, and we cannot convince him that there are no roosters around here. We can’t assuage his fear! But luckily it doesn’t affect him too often.

What do you mean Big Foot is fake??? Next you’ll tell me there is no Jersey Devil either!!
B LOVES Monsters Inc. & had watched it a gazillion times when one night she woke up crying that a monster had come out of her closet & scared her. I told her that it was just a dream b/c everyone knows monsters use your closet door to get into your room & we have NO CLOSET DOORS in the whole house! (Seriously we don’t. For some reason the people we bought the house from took them down & we just haven’t gotten around to buying new ones. Honestly I think it makes life easier, but it could also be b/c I am too busy working on our backyard to waste $$ on closet doors).
Good luck gf!

My son Jonathan is at once terrified and fascinated by thunderstorms. He used to get incredibly scared of them, and so we decided to educate him about how storms worked. The more he learns, the more fascinated he his, and it helps him manage his fear. He now wants to be a storm chaser when he grows up!
That being said I think he’s still scared of them… but at the same time he loves learning about them and seeing how they work. Maybe in your case, your daughter can explore some myths about bigfoot, and see how they’ve been proven false.
